Playing House

Michigan Democrat representative Lisa Brown was silenced by House Speaker James Bolger for using the word “vagina” in a debate about an anti-abortion bill. Can we get any more stupid? In a debate about what women are allowed to do with their own bodies, a woman uses the correct medical terminology and gets silenced by a man for being “too vulgar.” Ugh...

Lisa Brown later got even by reciting parts of “The Vagina Monologue” on the steps of the Michigan statehouse with other women silenced during the debate to a crowd of several thousands.

Abortion and birth control are two very different things. I get this is a political cartoon. I get that the author's views are inherent in making this comic funny. But I don't get how reducing a very complex issue to something this myopic is entertaining or clever.

Better luck next time.

Fixed the mistake. And CCarl, can we keep the topic at hand to the subject of the comic, not my other artworks please?

@ballistaehero Oh so you think Dobson can't do this comic because he knows nothing about politics aside from "democrats good, republicans bad" and that he doesn't have the drive or motivation to finish this project through? I'll tell you what, if you can name four other comic series he's abandoned, then you can win this argument. Otherwise you have no place in this conversation and can just get out now. I may not agree with every comic Andy's made, but what he's doing is trying to bring joy to millions of people, how can you be against that?

@Pradio : I recognize Soapbox Derpy is just starting up, but I'm worried for the artist's wellbeing and the comic's long-term prospects. Politics are far outside his area of expertise, meaning anything he says would be a rehash of something that has already been said. As such, the comic has little to separate itself from the thousands of other political cartoons and columns out there, all of which will be able to comment first - and in more depth. The fact is, this entire website is a somewhat doomed endeavor that will take away time the artist could be spending working on his other, more lucrative projects.

There are forums where you can have political discussions with experts. There are political cartoons that give a unique and informing take on events. There are even cartoonists who can get information first-hand from the politicians themselves. The author can't offer any of these, but is still attempting to break into political cartooning. He is already spreading himself thin through a number of other projects, and unless he gave those up and dedicated all his time to political studies I don't see any way this comic could ever progress anywhere. I think it's just a bad and wasteful idea from the get-go.

This strikes me as nothing but a failed popularity grab. When you have something to say, you don't need to get readers to submit stories. When you are passionate about politics, you don't misrepresent basic concepts. I can only foresee this endeavor fading away as the author realizes it is a waste of time he could be spending on something he cares about. And he should! Writing on something you're passionate about produces better work and is more enjoyable.

No need to apologize for the screwup - most of us think it's hilarious. If you need to apologize to anyone it's to yourself.

Yeah these are a bit late, I realize. I've been trying to get this site set up for several months and as a result topical comics I made became untopical the longer it took. I'm also working on a way to let users submit current event stories, so hopefully as the weeks progress it will be much more relevant. Sorry about the goof up, I'll try to be more accurate next time and do more research.

@ballistaehero You know, I'm glad we are all able to have a civil discussion about politics here on soapboxderpy. It's nice to have a place where we can discuss issues intelligently. I'm glad Andrew will let people post even if they have views which disagree with his, and not go on a banning spree like some internet artists we all know (cough cough TIM BUCKLEY). I disagree that this is a fruitless project on Dobson's part, the comic is really funny however, yes, it is over a month late I'll give you that. You must realize, however, that Soapbox Derpy only just started so it needs some time to catch up.

In addition to what CCarl said, I feel I should add that this incident had nothing to do with congress, and Rep. Brown was not silenced for "describing female anatomy" - she was silenced for ending a speech with "Finally Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but 'no' means 'no.'", which was somewhat crass and used the word purely for shock value. For someone who purports to look at both sides of an issue, your words make me wonder if you even listened to her speech.

If I may ask: why are you doing political comics? You clearly aren't well-versed in politics, your comics are too late to be topical, and your political views are not particularly original. Of all the projects you could dedicate your time to, this seems like the most fruitless imaginable.

LOL Those crazy Republicans and their anti-vagina agenda. Also, @CCarl I looked it up and you're right! Here are the sources I used to verify that you were correct:
